Fight the Frump- Salon on the Cheap

Fiight_the_frump_horror_button_2

I have hair issues. Naturally curly, yet grows out straight while I am pregnant/nursing, and then comes back curly again. Crazy, I know. Am am blessed with the ability to cut my own hair because curly hair is so forgiving.

But for Blissdom? I knew I need to splurge and stop chopping my hair with the kid safety scissors! But salons? Blargh! What was I to do?

My friend Summer told me about how she went to the beauty school in Nashville. I tried it? Oh my goodness, I can not tell you how great it was. They were fun, friendly and did a great job.

Best of all? $8.00 for the whole thing. You bet I tipped 100%!

My tip this week is to check out your local beauty school. You just may be able to pamper yourself without breaking the bank.

Guess who is having a special sensitive skin facial next week? :)

Now, I want to hear what you need to treat yourself to. Maybe a pedicure? Go for it!

xo, alli

**Speaking of facials- Remember I said my skin is so sensitive I couldn't use lotion with sunscreen? I tried this stuff-Cetaphil Facial Moisturizer. Fabulous. Two thumbs up!**

Check for an Aveda school. You get all natural products, along with a mini-facial or hand and arm massage with your haircut for only $15! Great talent too!
BTW, I learned the hard way, check out the hairdo’s on the ‘talent’ before you go in. Don’t want a school where they think high fashion is the mullet!

Pre BlissDom, I had a pedi (my sis is a stylist – so yeah, I kinda have to TIP BIG). The awesome thing about beauty school cuts/styles, etc – is that they need that experience to move on to their professional careers – it’s CRUCIAL. BUT ALSO, they have their teachers on hand and they won’t let you leave with a mullet (unless heaven forbid that’s what you asked for).

I treat myself by getting my mani, pedi & waxing done regularly. I’m demanding that way.

I absolutely have to get a pedicure. I will as soon as it gets warmer and I can start wearing sandals again. It is something I treat myself to every Spring. I can’t wait!

be careful if you’re a guy going to those places…my hubby went once and she totally cut it wrong and it’s a little bit more noticeable with guy hair cuts…so be careful!

I hear you on the crazy curly hair issues. Once, I splurged and got a Ouidad cut. Have you ever heard of that? She specializes in curly hair, and stylists can get trained in her style. It was the BEST cut of my life, but was well over a hundred dollars!!!! Now, my husband does my trims (and my color!!). I could stand to treat myself to ANY beauty procedure though. I haven’t had a professional ANYthing in about two years!

I just got what I needed to pamper myself … 5 days with my best friend since 6th grade, 6 states away from my home, husband, kids, and laundry! We did a whole lot of … well, nothing. It was amazing beyond all reason. Sometimes, emotional pampering can make your face look a whole lot prettier than a facial. What with all the smiles. :)

my oldest daughter graduated from beauty school 2 years ago, and I used to go up to the school for services all the time when she was in there (immediate family received 1/2 off those already cheap prices!!) – I’m really missing those facials!! Thanks for the reminder…….I think I should give the school a call and get a facial!!

I really need a haircut. I got a nice cut in October and haven’t been back since. I tease my husband that he gets his hair cut 3 times more often than I do.

What? Mullets are out?? My 21 month old has one since his hair grows the party in the back only!
I would totally go to one of those schools for a pedi. I’m not sure about my hair though. I just try to stretch it out as long as I can and then I’m not spending as much. If they messed up my hair, I *might* just hurt them with their own scissors!!!

And here I was thinking I’m the only one crazy enough to cut my own hair!!! LOL. If you ask me, I do a better job than the hairdresser (well, sometimes I do!).
I had my first every perm done by a student. It was PERFECT and lasted FOREVER!!! Unfortunately it’s now too far away for me to get it done by students (the school, not my hair – well, my hair is a long way from the school too – that’s what you get for living in the middle of nowhere!!!!).

I Very Big Heart our local beauty school. My Grandmother has always gone. I took her one day and they ‘worked me in’ for all kinds of services while I was waiting. Full spa day I tell you for less than it usually cost me for haircut and blow dry. I was so hooked. I could treat myself once a week if I wanted without much impact on our budget. Facial – check, Haircut – check, mani/pedi – check check… And with the instructors hovering nearby, usually the quality is better than at my old salon. Very Big Heart, indeed!
