I'm sure you will get lots of conflicting advice, but...I want to weigh in on Tweetlater to really advise against using it to regularly tweet. There are only a very few reasons to use it (for example, to enter a contest that requires a RT by scheduling it at 3 am so as not to spam!) but to use it regularly for self-promotion will net you many unfollows or will teach people to ignore your avatar or to put you in their Tweetdeck column entitled "One-Way Phony Promo Streets" if they don't want to unfollow you.

My tip:
I tweet about television sometimes because I love pop culture and like to share my loves with others. I live on the East Coast, though, and I've learned that it is very important to not tweet spoilers--too many details that would ruin a show for someone watching it later. This is courtesy even if you live on the West Coast, as many people watch shows later via DVR or DVD. Generic discussion is fine, but try to becareful about oversharing in the moment.
Here's me sharing love about Mad Men.

Here's my tweet about why Twitter is awesome:

LOVE the idea for your resource. Rawk it Alli!

Oh man, I just spent the weekend at a series of social events, trying to explain why I use Twitter. So much so that I barely tweeted all weekend! :-)

Favorite uses: Other than the common uses of sharing my own links, having convos, querying for information, etc., I actively use Twitter as a way to keep up on my favorite blogs. So, I *love* when people use Twitter to share their new posts. It's an immediate reminder to check awesome new content.

Twitter also has proven to be an amazing way to rally folks around an effort; in my case, a dedication to self-care and fitness (via @shredheads). In addition to the benefit of having terrific leaders (@mublogger and @wbgookin), the ease of Twitter really helped facilitate people getting (and staying!) on board. I've been actively working out since MARCH...and I've got the abs to prove it (heh!).

Finally, this weekend, I discovered a new angle regarding sharing/friendship on Twitter. Jennifer James (@mombloggersclub) wrote a really beautiful post about her top 25 women to follow on Twitter; even if I had not been on that list I would have wanted to share it because unlike a lot of Top X lists, she actually detailed WHY for each woman. Anyhow, I had been offline for a bit and would not have seen the tweet, had a follower of mine not let me know about it. I looked at Jennifer's feed and saw that she had not tweeted the people she included (probably because she's extremely humble!), so I took it upon myself to @ all of my friends on the list (including the lovely @alliworthington!) and then I went through and also @'d those I didn't know/follow. Many of these women also hadn't happened to see the link and much RT'ing, happiness, and new following commenced. All of this is to say that it was a neat way to help promote a quality post across a wealth of networks; and I got to learn about some excellent women to follow from someone who I admire and respect enormously.

Bad behaviors: My whole body cringes when I see people beg or bribe for followers. I just don't understand that behavior... if someone really wants followers, why not look for new followers (e.g., Mr. Tweet) and engage them in a conversation that makes them want to follow you back?

Here is one that I don't understand:
The person who spends all day on twitter, listing @_@_@_@_@_@_@. The tweets are just list of followers. Am I supposed to be excited if I am one of those hundreds of tweeple listed though out the day?

My problem on twitter:
I have to be careful of just sitting back and reading everyone's tweets, forgetting to actually get engaged in the conversation. I feel shy, and insecure that I don't have anything of great significance to add to the discussion. I know it is about putting yourself out there and taking the steps to just do it... I think there are many people, much like me, wanting to get involved and more engaged in the conversations, just not knowing how to jump in.
That is why I look forward to your book. I know you will have great info for twitter users just like me!!
Oh, and here is one of my BIGGEST mistakes.... hitting send before I properly proofread my tweet!!!!

I get about 17-19% of my traffic from twitter and I work at it a little. Incidentally I'm getting 12-13% from Stumble, do nothing and can't figure out how to do more... I digress.

I love tweetlater, and use it to automate sending out messages to my followers. I try to use common sense with this tool I have a number of saved tweets that I use and continually add more. I set them up for delivery throughout the day. I typically send out one per hour. I select them randomly, so the order yesterday and today are different.

I'm sure this bothers some followers, but I don't have the time to craft each message and post regularly every day, so this allows me to do that. I also notice on days that I miss, my twitter traffic is reduced. An indication to me that I'm walking the tight rope acceptably.

I also did an experiment with the dreaded auto DM's when people follow me, using tweetlater, I rotate 5-7 auto DM's... my feeling is I "really connect" with a few new people daily or weekly that I would otherwise miss now that my follower count is getting higher.

Tweetdeck seems essential once you have over 100 followers, without it I would miss tweets from people that I don't want to miss.

Twitter is clearly a great tool and walking the line between shameless self promotion and good twittenzenship.

I'd also warn about something I've seen going on the past few weeks. I went to a conference called She Speaks and all the bloggers/tweeters there were using #shespeaks as the hashtag. Now it seems that spammers have taken previous tweets from people and using that hashtag, so if you were still searching for that hashtag, you'd see these people who didn't really go -- or planning to go obviously because it's over already :D Just really, really weird. I guess these people are just trying to get people to look at their profiles or something -- but com' on -- I can tell that big burly looking guy wasn't at She Speaks ;)
